so when i returned the said hard drive to the external housing and attached the usb i was able to get testdisk 7.0 to a point where i decided my only The drive inside that case is indeed a standard hard drive. it became a hard drive marked as raw after last restart. It is definitely coming from the HD unit - somewhere on the circuit board I think. - listening very closely the sound is a 'bzzz.
